BIG BANG

The 1997 Fashion Big Bang exhibition has been open at the Musée Galliera in Paris for about a month and a half now. “1997 was a turning point in fashion history: it marked the transition into the 21st century and gave impetus to the careers of some of the main players in the industry who have influenced it for the past 26 years” - with these words, you are greeted by the 1997 Fashion Big Bang exhibition. The title is a reference to a Vogue Paris article that dubbed the spring-summer 1997 couture season the "big bang" Paris needed to defend its title as the fashion capital of the world. And Paris did exactly that. What do Rei Kawakubo, Tom Ford, Yohji Yamamoto, Ann Demeulemeister, and Margiela have in common? It was their revolutionary works, shown in the fall of 1996, that became, according to the curators of 1997 Fashion Big Bang, the key shows of the season and clearly demonstrated how diverse the fashion of the 90s was. The exhibition is tiny compared for example to MET annual extravaganza, however, its importance is visible not only to those who have been living and working in fashion at this time but even to those who are new to high fashion ( a little girl who was standing next to me whispered to her mother looking at JPG look: I want to make a dress like this).
